A short history of the Magic Island
The island was home to the Carijó Guarani people before Portuguese settlers founded the village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro in the 17th century. Between 1748 and 1756, around 6,000 settlers arrived from the Azores islands, and their heritage still shapes the island: colourful colonial houses, lace-making, fishing traditions and villages such as Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha. The city took the name Florianópolis in 1894. Its landmark, the Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, opened in 1926 and reopened in 2019 after a long restoration. Distances look short on the map, but traffic on the island’s few main roads can be heavy in summer.
